Long story short, expect some oddities as the move begins, but I’d say we should be moved within the next few weeks.

Also, I’d like to apologise for my lack of posts, but trust me, something big and amazing is coming down the pipes.  When we started we had a team of 4-6 people assisting in writing posts.  At this point nobody is actively writing.

To that end, please send me a note if you feel the urge to volunteer!  I’d love to hear from you.

***Update:  Looks like some nasty little memory configuration issues have been mostly cleared up.  There are likely a few things left to resolve, so please be patient, and feel free to comment in this story with anything you’ve noticed!

This would normally be fine, but there really has been lots of news lately.  And just why have we been slacking off?  Well, many of the people you see who normally post here do so as they can, and all have had reduced availability.  We cherish our news reporters, they are the heart that beats the blood of news through the site, but alas, we have had a few cardiac arrests in recent months.

Personally, my availability as webmaster has been tenuous, and this has been pretty frustrating.

I know there has to be at least a couple of you out there who thinks that the lack of updates here is a shame as well, and I’d invite you to fill out the little form below, and throw your hand up in the air to help.

If you aren’t sure what this entails, no worries!  There is no commitment behind signing up, only opportunity to help this grand site.  Don’t know what you or how you would participate?  Don’t worry!  Participation is in general quite easy, and is something that I can teach you via email or through a quick phone conversation.

I can hear you all now, “Where’s the form?!  Sign me up!!!”, well, calm down, here it is!

It would probably be best to indicate to those of you who are uninitiated, just what in the world a “Wiki” is.

In essence, it is a website that is a repository of information about a subject or subjects.  These can be narrowly defined, or broadly defined, (as is the case with the Wikipedia), but in all cases, the Wiki is unique in that the content is added and improved based upon what is directly contributed by it’s users and readers.

So what does this mean really?  It means that you all have a new job, as a content producer for the ETWiki!  Doing your part will ensure your place in history, as we fill in the gaps at the ETWiki.  What is there right now is a good solid framework from which to work from, and for you to build upon!

They’d also like you to try your hand at coming up with a new logo.  Certainly feel welcome to send your suggestions to them!  Submit your ideas HERE!

For now, make sure to visit the ETWiki and register up!

I know how annoying it can be when a site changes their look, so I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.  The change will support our efforts to get back into podcasting after our lengthy hiatus.

We are still looking to finalize the header image/title, so look for that to change in the next few weeks once that is sorted.

In the meantime, I’m sorry we didn’t have the KN Blogs link setup yesterday.  It simply slipped my mind as most of the links are automatic, but that one is hard coded into the theme.  I literally had about 30 minutes to get everything implemented yesterday, so I didn’t really do a lot of double checking.

Yes, that’s right, Elephant Talk has finally run it’s final course of passionate discussions of both merit and substance, (some perhaps with less substance than others), regarding King Crimson and their related alumni.

When I first started looking for information related to King Crimson online, I was very thankful to find the Elephant Talk website. Not only was it a huge source of information in those early days for KN, perhaps one of our only sources, the webmaster, Dan Kirkdorffer was immensely helpful and even helped us build our base audience. Rather than take it as a competition, Dan saw the value in having the two sites work in tandem. I certainly count it as a good success for both parties.

So here’s to you Dan, and all others involved at ET on a hugely successful run. I can only hope Krimson News will be able to count a fraction of the excellence you have. You have all been an inspiration and educator, and I thank you.

One of the things most designers and webmasters tell me with routine frequency is that light text on a black background just doesn’t cut it anymore. I’ve resisted, being myself, but due to the aforementioned bug in the old theme, it was finally time to look elsewhere.

I should have a poll section up again soon for you, where I will ask for your help in the final decision of what to do, as we move forward into the unknown. I do know I want to keep the existing graphic, which I will be retrofitting this theme to accept shortly. I will also be modifying some of the other features I had implemented into the old design to be included into this one.

What happened:

What was ugly, Nadim?  Well, everything.  On Friday afternoon, the server’s operating system (as a Windows proponent, let me just mention it’s a Linux distribution *evil*) gave out completely after little pieces of the system had flickered into and out of operability over the morning.  A complete reinstall of the server and its software became necessary.  Three questions actuated immediately:

1) How do you back up data from an inoperable system?

2) How do you store backups efficiently without having physical access to a server to burn them on DVDs?

3) How stable and contiguous would backups of an inoperable system be?

Well, finding answers to these questions was painful and took quite a long time.  Hence, the five-day downtime.  Now that everything’s been backed up successfully (after days of hitting dead ends and a work-related, high-priority system restore of a Linux server that was gruesomly hacked into little pieces), I’m starting to bring elements of the Krimson News server online again bit by bit.  If you find anything I list as working below that doesn’t work correctly, please send me an e-mail at nadim@crimsonjazztrio.com .

What’s working right now:

News site, WordPress dashboard, diaries and forums.

What’s going to work in a little while:

E-mail (SMTP/POP/IMAP).

Apologies:

Sincere apologies that it’s taken this long for anything on this site to get back up.  I hope it is understandable that neither Jeff nor I were able to work full-time on this reinstall project–we’re both people who need to work for a living.  Over the course of Wednesday, I will revive the remaining pieces of Krimson News as I find time.  Please keep watching the status updates in this news post (immediately above this paragraph) to see what is and isn’t working.

We’re going to implement a pretty cool and new backup methodology (Cleversafe Dispersed Storage) to schedule dispersed and versioned snapshots of all elements of this site and its operating system so a long downtime such as this won’t happen again.

Again, sorry that Krimson News has been down so long, but rest assured we’re working on keeping you up-to-date with news and podcasts consistently from now on.

The new feature allows you to create audio comments and attach them to news stories on the site. So, instead of calling us via Skype, you can just leave us your loving comments, whispering sweet nothings of your adoration for that particular news story.

At this time, audio comments are limited to 30 seconds each, but gauged upon popularity, I may invest in an upgrade so we have much much more time.

This should be lots of fun, and I hope that everyone who has access to a microphone on their computer gives it a whirl…

Here’s how:

1) If you aren’t registered at the site yet, click HERE
2) Log in (Click HERE)
3) Go to the end of the news story you want to comment on and look for the, “Leave Comment” link.
4) You will see the comment dialog box as normal, with the addition of a new link under it which says, “Insert Audio Comment”. Click on it.
5) It will load a Java applet, and likely ask for permission to install that applet. Click “Yes”.
6) You will see a dialog appear under the normal comments dialog text entry box as shown below:

7) Once you are ready, click on the “Record” button and recording will commence.
As indicated you can pause, stop, and preview the recording. Clicking on “Record” again after clicking “Stop” will start the recording over.
9) Once satisfied, click Attach. (The recording is not saved until you click Attach)
10) Type in a short message, into the text part of the comments dialog, click on the “Submit Comment” button, and voila! You’ve submitted an audio comment.

The audio comment will then go into our moderation queue, which I check routinely.

This system is very new, and it’s not unlikely that people may have problems making this work. If you have any questions or problems, please email me: HERE

Please make sure that your comments are appropriate or I won’t be able to approve them. Other than that, have fun! I’m very interested in what you all do with this.

“Why?” you may ask.

A few reasons:

1) Having more people “subscribed” will grab the attention of those who may not initially be drawn by a [tag]King Crimson[/tag] podcast. If we can get people to listen, I’m pretty sure more often than not, we’ll be able to open some musical eyes to a mysterious world they are terribly unfamiliar with. What a wonderful opportunity!

2) There is a good benefit for you as well! The site is brand new, but they are already closing in on 100 shows the first day registration has been open. What does this mean? Well, it means that if you are interested in, or have other shows you listen to, you’ll be able to use their feature to get all of these shows in a single feed, or simply be able to listen to them all at one place.

They have some other services that are in the wings, but won’t likely see light for a while yet.

If your current Krimson News podcast subscription in iTunes or any other podcast client doesn’t work anymore, you can manually subscribe to the podcast RSS feed located at http://www.krimson-news.com/?feed=rss2&category_name=podcasts :

Podcast subscription instructions for iTunes:

1) In the iTunes menu, click on “Advanced | Subscribe to Podcast…”.

2) In the ”Subscribe to Podcast” window that opens, type or copy and paste the URL http://www.krimson-news.com/?feed=rss2&category_name=podcasts into the “URL” field and click “OK”.

3) Depending on your settings, you will now be able to see all Krimson News podcast episodes, or iTunes will automatically download the latest episode.

For other podcast client programs, please refer to your software documentation to find out how to add a podcast feed manually.  Use the RSS feed URL described in Step 2 of the iTunes directions.
