If you tried to read up on some Krimson News over the last hour or two, you may have noticed nothing. Absolutely nothing, except perhaps for a few browser error messages that our site wasn’t available.

The reason: memory problems. Whether that’s because our virtual private server (VPS) doesn’t allot more than 200MB of RAM (even though our plan allows 256MB) or some of the physical memory on the shared server is faulty, I don’t know. I don’t care, either, because:

Jeff just executed an order on a dedicated server, which should be ready by tomorrow. Over the next week, I’ll monitor this server and deploy the New Place®. After that will come a testing period and, finally, the transition period, which I’ll announce well ahead of time and that will cause Krimson News to be unavailable for at most a couple of hours.

Before mid-September, we should be moved to a bigger, better and–most importantly–dedicated server, and Krimson News should be a much faster and enjoyable experience. Until we’re on the new server, please keep in mind that we’ve outgrown the current server, and that temporary hiccups may happen.

Cheers and thank you for your ever-generous patience!

Nadim

Wow, I never figured I’d see the day. Well, that’s not true, but you know what I mean.

Yes, that’s right, Elephant Talk has finally run it’s final course of passionate discussions of both merit and substance, (some perhaps with less substance than others), regarding King Crimson and their related alumni.

When I first started looking for information related to King Crimson online, I was very thankful to find the Elephant Talk website. Not only was it a huge source of information in those early days for KN, perhaps one of our only sources, the webmaster, Dan Kirkdorffer was immensely helpful and even helped us build our base audience. Rather than take it as a competition, Dan saw the value in having the two sites work in tandem. I certainly count it as a good success for both parties.

So here’s to you Dan, and all others involved at ET on a hugely successful run. I can only hope Krimson News will be able to count a fraction of the excellence you have. You have all been an inspiration and educator, and I thank you.

This borders on rumor, but it appears that it is quite possible that Liquid Tension Experiment may yet collaborate for a third album!

Liquid Tension Experiment consists of Tony Levin, and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, and John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess. Liquid Tension Experiment is well described by the Wikipedia as an instrumental rock project playing fast and furious fusion based songs, like a jazzy Dream Theater, but without vocals.

Their last album, (Liquid Tension Experiment 2), was released back in 1999, and subsequently members, most notably, Mike Portnoy, have stated that there would not be a third LTE album released, since 3/4 of the band is the current Dream Theater lineup.

Ultimate-Guitar.com recently posted a news story about a third album, indicating that this may have all changed recently when Mike Portnoy posted on his own message boards a short message indicating a desire to proceed with a third Liquid Tension Experiment album:

Post @ Mike Portnoy’s Site Forum

In the post he indicates that they’d like to get back together as Liquid Tension Experiment and do some more music some day, but that there is an obstacle currently precluding this, presumeably related to difficulties Portnoy experienced with LTE’s record label, Magna Carta.

Where there is a will, usually these things can work themselves out, and I for one will wait patiently for the third album! Thanks to ProgArchives.com’s forum for the tip!

I have a little more “off topic” but still related news. Our friends over at Weedshare.com are in the news and this time it is related to MS’s recently announced music/video player called the Zune.

Apparently one of the services that has been presented by Microsoft promising some really great things for peer to peer music file sharing/trading. Let’s get to some of the details shall we?

You can send music from the [tag]Zune[/tag] to another person’s Zune, to share it with them.

If the file has been purchased free and clear, the file will transfer without DRM.

If this file has been purchased with a Zune DRM, the file will still transfer, but will is restricted to play up to 3 times before being disabled, prompting you to purchase the song.

Obviously, this promises to be a huge boon to P2P supporters, allowing for a legal avenue for people to share their music collection, but still retaining the artist’s rights. Everyone wins, finally a [tag]DRM[/tag] that works for both the listener and artist.

It’s just too bad that they didn’t come up with it.

Since 2003, [tag]WeedShare[/tag]’s DRM technology has been doing the same thing, only better, in fact, a Microsoft PDF file published by Darko Kirovski and Kamal Jain from [tag]Microsoft[/tag] Research appears, which you can find it online, here:
Offline Economies for Digital Media, was referenced in the link found at Geek News Central.

This document outlines the strategy that MS is following with the Zune, and starts off by crediting WeedShare for coming up with the concept. The problem? They also credit [tag]John Beezer[/tag] with the patent on the concept and technology. John is a founding member of Weedshare.com.

From what we’ve seen, the Zune and Weed DRM appear identical, albeit Weedshare’s is much more fleshed out, tested, and functional. It seems very odd that MS wouldn’t want to at least license proven software, but instead have decided to copy the design and concept while rebuilding it from the ground up.

Make sure to check out the news source below:

This morning was the good word from Robert Scoble, who was talking with [tag]Steve Ball[/tag], ([tag]Crafty Guitarist[/tag] and [tag]Microsoft[/tag]’s Manager for their Audio/Video Excellence team).

It seems there’s been a small amount of controversy about the [tag]Windows Vista[/tag] [tag]startup sound[/tag], which all indications currently read, will be compiled from soundscape sessions by [tag]Robert Fripp[/tag]. The controversy revolves around the ability to mute, turn off this sound, or even change it. It has been reported in several locations that these abilities will not be available to the end user of Vista. However, in Robert Scoble’s phone conversation with Steve, Steve indicated that they still had not made a final decision.

As a Windows user I can see many possible reasons why they’d like to do this, however, the inability to mute or change the startup sound could be initially annoying and secondarily create difficulties as an end user. What if I have to reboot my laptop silently?

Does this mean that you will be forced to listen to Robert Fripp each time you boot your Windows Vista installed machine? It sounds like it might be the case, granted turning off the speakers may work in most situations where the speakers are not integrated to the computer.

Forced to listen to Robert Fripp? Is that really so bad? Maybe not, but at least it’s not Britney Spears.

As was stated in the posting by the [tag]Scobleizer[/tag], Steve Ball and his team are actively interested in what the public has to say about this. Feel free to add your comments and thoughts in this posting.

For now, make sure you read the full posting over at Robert Scoble’s blog linked below:
