The excellent band no-man whose core members consist of Steven Wilson on instrumentation and Tim Bowness’ amazing voice is set to release their next studio album entitled “Schoolyard Ghosts” on May 12th.

What gives this a Crim spin is that this album features some guest appearances from Pat Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison amongst many others, in fact, here’s a snippet of the writeup:

A distinctive combination of beautifully detailed songwriting, haunting melodies and inventively cinematic production, ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ sees Tim and Steven expanding the band’s sonic palette yet again by collaborating with (amongst others) Californian pedal steel guitar ace Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club, Red House Painters), drummers Pat Mastelotto(King Crimson, Mastica) and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson), saxophonist/flautist Theo Travis, and the London Session Orchestra arranged by Dave Stewart(Hatfield & The North, Egg, Stewart & Gaskin etc).

A new no-man album by itself it’s pretty exciting, but add in these other elements, and you’ve certainly piqued my interest! Further details are available at no-man’s site linked above or check out the album’s minisite HERE and be sure to check out the haunting video!

Reunited super group Asia releases a new double live CD on June 26th. Fantasia-Live in Tokyo: 2007 was recorded in March 2007 on the Japanese leg of their world tour. A companion DVD will be released this Fall. All four original members of Asia give a heavy dose of songs from their platinum selling first two Asia albums. John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Steve Howe and Geoff Downes also dip into the past with classics by Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and even King Crimson with ‘Court of the Crimson King’. The CD has original artwork by Roger Dean.

Asia also kicked off a new North American leg of their tour last week. They will be playing some dates in Germany and Italy in late July and the UK in December. You can find the tour dates at the Original Asia website here. Keep checking as more European dates will be announced.

Finally, Steve Howe was interviewed by Billboard a week ago about the tour, but also mentioned that Asia will begin recording a new studio album in early 2008. You can read about it here.

Over at Adrian Belew’s new blog, which I’m hopelessly addicted to, (was there any doubt?), Adrian spills the peas, so to speak, and lets us in on the album name for the upcoming new Bears album. The album name is: ‘Voila!’

The Bears, of course, consist of Adrian Belew, Rob Fetters, Chris Arduser and Bob Nyswonger.

With a name, sure to be the seed for many lame puns in small record shops across the land, ‘Voila!’, is the fourth studio album to be released by the Bears quartet. The album has been described by Adrian to be, “grrrrrrreat!”.

Earlier this month, he also let us know a few song titles, and teased us on another.

Adrian also indicated that he and his bandmates all agree that it is likely their best album yet. From my standpoint, they’ve only gotten better over the years, like masters honing their skills, and I certainly can’t wait to hear it!

John Kelman at AllAoutJazz.com continues his regular reviews of King Crimson and related artists with a thorough look at the Crimson reissue of the four CD boxed set The Great Deceiver (Live 1973-1974). Previously out of print for some time, The Great Deceiver showcases Robert Fripp, David Cross, John Wetton and Bill Bruford at the peak of their improvisatory powers. Kelman writes that “none of the other incarnations could match this Crimson for its energy, unfettered sense or exploration and ability to let things happen in a completely unconsidered way.”

The original members of Asia are currently on a 25th Anniversary Tour of the U.S. with Cleveland’s House of Blues on tap for tomorrow. The band has also announced dates in England for November and December. It’s expected that more European dates will be announced later as well as dates in Japan and possibly another U.S. leg.

The original line up of Asia took the music world by storm in 1982 and consisted of progressive rock superstars John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe and Carl Palmer. Asia’s self titled first album was the biggest selling album in the world that year. The current tour features the Wetton era hits with a dose of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes and even ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ reportedly worked into the set list.

This week also marks the release of Asia’s The Definitive Collection on CD. Another in what seems like an endless stream of reissues of Asia’s hits, this all Wetton hit package has 16 tracks including Geoff Downe’s remix of ‘Go’. If you live in the States, Best Buy has an exclusive CD/DVD version that contains all six of the band’s music videos from the early 1980s. While clearly influenced by the embryonic stages of MTV, the videos make for some interesting viewing. This deluxe version is on sale for just $7.99 through Saturday at Best Buy only.

If you’re into Asia’s brand of prog pop, you can visit their revamped official website at the link below. The tour dates page is sure to be updated, so keep abreast of any changes, cancellations or additions.
