Windows Vista recently went “Gold”, meaning it will be shipping to manufacturers soon and the general public just after the first of the year. After a long time in coming, we are finally privvy to the contributions Robert Fripp made towards the Windows Vista sound scheme.
Many of you already know that Robert Fripp contributed several hours of soundscapes over at Microsoft’s headquarters several months ago. You can find the video from MSDN’s Channel 9 video archive HERE. In the video, you’ll see several people including Steve Ball.
The sound subsystem is very nice by itself, but add to that RF’s contributions, and the fact that all of the sounds were increased significantly in fidelity, and it’s not hard to say there’s been marked improvement, even without first hand experience. It is a little difficult to tell which of the sounds were generated by Robert Fripp and which ones were developed elsewhere, if any.
The audio is very short, subtle and pleasant for all of the sounds, and the again, the side by side comparison is neat.
