In a move that shows Microsoft DOES listen, even if the argument at times, seems beyond the pale, ArsTechnica reports that in the latest beta build of Windows Vista, users are now able to mute the startup sound.

The startup sound, which will be made up of a 2-3 second musical soundscape phrase from Robert Fripp who went to Microsoft specifically to record the sound, is said to be planned for the final release version of Windows Vista, currently slated for an early 2007 release date.

The change was also confirmed by Windows Vista product manager, Nick White on the Windows Vista Team Blog.
