An Addendum to the Paul Richards’ Interview

(This interview was originally conducted by Kade Graves, AKA: kaveman)

As my conversation with Paul Richards’ came towards the end, I was curious, what do the individual members of the California Guitar Trio do when they are not playing together as “the California Guitar Trio”?

Paul quickly answered for himself, but felt it was better that Bert Lams and Hideyo Moriya to answer for themselves. So with the advancement of technology and some help from Paul, I was able to get Bert and Hideyo’s answer to my question.

Here’s what they had to say:

Paul:
Musically the CGT is my main focus now. I occasionally get invited to do other things, but haven’t had much time for anything else.

Bert:
1) I am currently working on a project with Andrew Keeling. I am transcribing and Andrew is arranging our favourite Soundscapes by Robert Fripp for orchestra. We now have some 40 minutes of music ready. I am still working on more and we hope to do a recording very soon.

2) I am preparing for future music with CGT. This will probably include other musicians as well.

3) I am teaching guitar to some of my favourite students in England.

4) And of course there are the piggies in Broad Chalke! I will be working there this winter as well.

Hideyo:
In 1998 to 1999, when I was not on tour with the CGT, I played in a Japanese group. I formed this acoustic guitar trio with friends, Yuta Saito, Toshiyuki Kanda and myself. This group was called “ASTARTE” and we played small clubs and old folks homes. This group disbanded in December of 1999.

This year, Yuta Saito and myself start our next project, which is using electric guitar, electric bass, electric drum etc.

As you can see the CGT are not quiet even in their off time. The same energy they bring to a live show is carried over into the other responsibilities and projects in their lives. Hopefully after these few months of touring the U.S. and Japan, CGT will be able to rest a little before they take on their respective outside responsibilities.

A special thanks to Paul, Bert and Hideyo for your responses! Good luck with the rest of your tour schedule!
